THE COMMUNITY OF BETHANY
The Heart of Route 66
Bethany is a suburb of Oklahoma City located along the Mother Road - the historic Route 66. Bethany consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in Oklahoma because of access to good public education, low cost of living, access to amenities, and overall diversity.
Bethany combines an overall low cost of living with easy access to the abundant amenities of the Oklahoma City Metro. Nestled along Historic Route 66 between Oklahoma City and Yukon, the entire metro area is just a short commute away. Home to both Southern Nazarene and Southwestern Christian University, Bethany is a wonderful place to call home.
The city sends students to two public school systems, Bethany Public Schools and Putnam City Public Schools. Both districts rank among the best in the state in terms of testing, student to teacher ratio, and high school graduation. With highly-rated teachers, prep-courses, top-notch academics, and competitive sports, the school districts have been a major pull to the area for homebuyers and families across the state.
Founded in 1909 as a community for members of the Church of the Nazarene, Bethany has a long and rich history dating back to the early days of statehood. Today, the largest employer in the city - Southern Nazarene University - is a testament to Bethany's Nazarene history. In 1930, the city was almost completely wiped out by a devastating F4 tornado, but the city persevered and is now an important part of the Oklahoma City Metro area.
Located just 10 miles west of downtown Oklahoma City, the entire metro area is just a short drive away. Head down to Bricktown for a night on the town, or take a drive down Route 66, either way you are in the perfect spot to enjoy all the Oklahoma City area has to offer.
Bethany offers fun for the entire family with festivals throughout the year such as the 4th of July Celebration, Christmas Tree Lighting, and the Bethany 66 Festival. Head over to Lake Overholser and rent a paddleboard from Flat Tide, or admire local art at Gallery 66.
Bethany has some great thrifting and antiquing. It also has several local restaurants with four or more stars on Yelp: Aloha Shave Ice & Coffee Shop with local shaved ice, coffee, and sandwiches, Birrieria Diaz serving Mexican cuisine offered for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There is also Swadley's Bar-B-Q an Oklahoma mainstay with over 80 years of serving OKC great BBQ, Papa Angelo's Pizza boasting a one of a kind, mouth-watering, New York-style pizza, and the Stray Dog Café which features local, homemade food from biscuits and gravy, burgers, and homemade pies.
