COMMUNITY BACKSTORY

Norman was first settled during the Land Run of 1889, and named in honor of Abner Norman who was the initial land surveyor of the land. Officially incorporated as May 13, 1891, five months after the founding of the University of Oklahoma. Experiencing sustained growth throughout its existence, by the time I-35 was completed in 1959, Norman was well on its way to being a bedroom community for Oklahoma City.
